Alexander McCall Smith

Alexander (R.A.A.) ”Sandy” McCall Smith (s. 24. elokuuta 1948 Bulawayo, Rhodesia) on skotlantilainen kirjailija ja Edinburghin yliopiston oikeustieteen emeritusprofessori. McCall Smith on arvostettu oikeuslääketieteen ja bioetiikan asiantuntija. Kansainvälisesti hän on kuitenkin tunnettu erityisesti kirjailijana ja Mma Ramotswe tutkii -kirjasarjan kirjoittajana.

Elämäkerta

Alexander McCall Smith on syntynyt Rhodesiassa, nykyisessä Zimbabwessa. Nuoruutensa hän asui Bulawayossa, lähellä Botswanan rajaa. Myöhemmin hän muutti Skotlantiin, jossa opiskeli oikeustieteen tohtoriksi. Valmistumisensa jälkeen McCall Smith palasi vuosiksi takaisin Afrikkaan ja oli mukana perustamassa oikeustieteen opetusta Botswanan yliopistoon. McCall Smith on luennoinut ympäri maailmaa useissa eri yliopistoissa, esimerkiksi Italiassa ja Yhdysvalloissa. Afrikasta hän palasi takaisin Skotlantiin, jossa toimi Edinburghin yliopistossa oikeustieteen professorina.

McCall Smith on toiminut oman alansa järjestöjen johtotehtävissä. Hän on arvostetun brittiläisen lääketieteellisen julkaisun (British Medical Journal) eettisen komitean entinen puheenjohtaja. Lisäksi McCall Smith on Human Genetics Commission of the United Kingdomin entinen varapuheenjohtaja sekä Unescon kansainvälisen bioeettisen lautakunnan entinen jäsen.

McCall Smith nimitettiin joulukuussa 2006 Brittiläisen imperiumin ritarikuntaan (CBE). Kesäkuussa 2007 hänelle myönnettiin kunniatohtorin arvonimi Edinburghin yliopiston oikeustieteellisen tiedekunnan kolmesataavuotisjuhlissa.

Harrastuksenaan McCall Smith soittaa kontrabassoa sekä sousafonia perustamassaan orkesterissa nimeltä The Really Terrible Orchestra. Hänen vaimonsa Elisabeth on orkesterin huilisti.

Kirjailijanura

Alexander McCall Smith on kirjoittanut tai toimittanut yli 60 teosta, joista osa käsittelee hänen erikoisalaansa lääketieteen etiikkaa. Hän on julkaissut myös novellikokoelmia, humoristisia romaaneja sekä lastenkirjoja. Kaiken kaikkiaan McCall Smithin kirjoja on tähän mennessä käännetty 40 kielelle ja myyty yli 14 miljoonaa kappaletta.

McCall Smith aloitti kirjailijan uransa lastenkirjailijana 1980-luvulla. Hänen kansainvälisesti tunnetuimpia kirjojaan ovat Mma Ramotswe -romaanit, joissa McCall Smith tutustuttaa lukijan lämminhenkisesti botswanalaiseen arkipäivään. Ensimmäinen Mma Ramotswe -romaani, The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency (suom. Naisten etsivätoimisto nro 1, 2003), ilmestyi vuonna 1998. Kirja sai kaksi Booker Judges' Special Recommendationia ja valittiin Times Literary Supplementin äänestyksessä yhdeksi vuoden merkittävimmistä kirjoista.

Tähän mennessä Mma Ramotswe -sarjaa on ilmestynyt 22 osaa, joista 20 on julkaistu suomeksi. McCall Smithiltä on ilmestynyt suomeksi myös Akimbo-pojasta kertovia lastenromaaneja.

Mma Ramotswe -sarjan lisäksi McCall Smith on kirjoittanut useita muita romaanisarjoja, mm. Professor Dr. von Igelfeld Entertainments -sarja (2003-), The Sunday Philosophy Club -sarja (2004-), The 44 Scotland Street -sarja (2005) ja Detective Varg -sarja (2019-).
