Gecarcinus est typus generis Gecarcinidarum, familiae cancrorum terrestrium. Species inveniuntur in calidioribus Americarum regionibus litoralibus, inter quae sunt insulae in Mari Caribaeo sitae. Quattuor species in insulis Pacificis endemicae in Gecarcinos ut subgenus Johngarthia olim comprehensae sunt, sed nunc genus separatum, Johngarthia, habentur.[1] Cum omnes species huius generis plerumque sunt terrestriales, ad mare redire debent ad regenerandum (larvae solum in aqua salsa pariuntur). Eis saepe sunt colores vividi, quorum praevalentes sunt ruber, aurantius, purpureus, flavus, albus, niger. Qua pro causa nonnullae species, insigniter Gecarcinus quadratus et Gecarcinus lateralis, animalia dilecta populo gratae sunt.
