Please can you sort the references out on this article? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:25, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- It's on my list of things to do, i'm really busy this week ....I'll try to get to it. I figured it was better to get the article started even in an ugly state, than having no article at all. The edit summary of the very first edit has a link to the German Wikipedia article that has the properly formatted citations. Noleander (talk) 17:40, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Do you mind if I draftify it, and you can look at it when you have more time? It's not really in a fit state for mainspace right now — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:21, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I mind. I spent time getting that aritcle started ... if its draftified, no one (inclding me) will ever revisit it. Relax, there is no deadline. I added Template:underconstruction. Noleander (talk) 21:26, 11 December 2025 (UTC)

Guidance on Improving Vital Engineering Articles?
[edit]Hi Noleander, thank you for your impressive contributions on engineering-related vital articles! I'm working on improving Archimedes' screw, a level 4 vital article, and will maybe nominate it for GA/FA status? I'm curious to know your research process for vital articles, as well as how you manage to push through the challenges of overhauling vital articles (especially considering this is a relatively obscure topic). Icepinner (Come to Hakurei Shrine!) 09:35, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Icepinner: - The process I use for vital articles is essentially the same as any article; the only difference is that reviewers may be familiar with the item/topic, and so they will make suggestions about content that should be added to the article. My process for any article, Vital or not, is
- Aim for FA status from the start; use FA criteria from day one.
- Go through GA, then one or two PRs, then FA
- For GA and PRs: if a week goes by and no one starts the review, I find a good reviewer that has an article that also needs a review, and contact them, and ask them if the would be willing to swap reviews. 90% of the time they agree. Swapping reviews is common for PR, more rare in GA (some editors think swapping reviews in GA is discouraged - but swapping GA reviews is not prohibited).
- I use about 10 tools to catch errors (CopyVio tool, Page Size; spell checker, AI-detector, Cite tool, Unreferenced passage tool, etc). Run them before nominating for GA or FA, and fix any issues they identify.
- Cites/sources must be immaculate: Many reviewers will see errors in cites/source format/layout as a sign of sloppy editing
- When there are 2 or more cites for a sentence: bundle them so they appear as a single superscript
- Spend a lot of time searching for academic/scholarly sources: do not rely exclusively on books, newspapers & websites. Use WP:RX and WP:TWL if needed.
- Feel free to contact me if you want me to look at the Archimedes' screw article some day, e.g I can do a Peer Review.
- Here is the full checklist I use for my own FA nominations: User:Noleander/FA_checklist. Noleander (talk) 15:44, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- I looked at the AS article, it is looking great! One small issue I see: Source titles:
- Sentence case: Archimedes screw generators for sustainable micro-hydropower production
- Title case: Sennacherib, Archimedes, and the Water Screw: The Context of Invention in the Ancient World
- Pick one cap style and use it for all sources; ignore how the sources capitalize themselves. Noleander (talk) 16:01, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the guidance, Noleander! This has instilled hope in me that this article can be GA'ed (of course, much work still needs to be done). I've started changing the source titles, but ZKang's script doesn't seem to work for the sources in the bibliography section, so it'll take some time. Icepinner (Come to Hakurei Shrine!) 16:57, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for informing me about that Zkang tool ... I was unaware of it. Someone should post a "improvement suggestion" on their Talk page about getting it to work on sources in Biblio section ... that is where many articles have all or most of their sources. Noleander (talk) 17:17, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- I'll speak to ZKang about the issue. Icepinner (Come to Hakurei Shrine!) 23:17, 26 December 2025 (UTC)

People links on Template:Nile River
[edit]I noticed your edit to Template:Nile River when I fixed the link to Lake Albert (Africa). I was wondering what the significance of Speke (a suburb of Liverpool), the Welsh actor Richard Burton and Grant are to this template?— Rod talk 20:00, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for helping with that. That NavBox is a work in progress. I'm working on the Nile article. I just created that NavBox template a couple hours ago, and added it to only a single article Nile. I should finish the NavBox within 2 days. I still need to (a) add more links; (b) alphabetize; and (c) resolve ambiguous links.
- The Speke and Grant are last names of people related to the Nile. Ditto for Richard Burton ... I need to disambiguate them. I'll get to it soon. Of course, I would never add ambig links into an existing NavBox: but this is brand new, and used only in a single article that is in the midst of an overhaul. Noleander (talk) 20:05, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
- I only spotted it as the bot had picked it up & placed it on Templates with disambiguation links. I'll await your fixes.— Rod talk 20:20, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
- FYI: I disambiguated those links in the NavBox in this edit. Noleander (talk) 23:12, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

Nile basin
[edit]Hi, I extended the list of countries for the Nile yesterday, but today I restarted the whole process and with tremendous help from AI (Claude Sonnet 4.5) based the map on https://mrb.grdc.bafg.de/ and with QGIS clipped all OSM data (rivers, lakes) to that area. Power stations still to be added. Please reply on my page (which shows work in progress). Erik Zachte (talk) 12:06, 8 February 2026 (UTC)
- There is a new version, with color coded elevation.Erik Zachte (talk) 04:20, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
- I made a new version. Seeing the comment below, did you ask the same question to several people, Amitchell125? Erik Zachte (talk) 13:34, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for the update to your map. No, I did not ask a second editor to make a map. They were performing a GA review of the Nile article and created a new map. They made the map on their own. I apologize for any redundant work, that was never my intention ... once one person starts doing a job, it would be rude to ask a second person to do a similar job.
- The Nile article is huge and it will be going to the featured article process in a couple months. The article will include several maps at that time. Both maps will be used in the article. Again, I'm sorry for the confusion... it was not my intention. Noleander (talk) 14:04, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- I am still disappointed about how you handled this. You were really enthusiastic about my map, and asked for fine tuning, which I did. Then you get a second map offered, which is almost the same, (the basin border is different) and you treat it like a god-sent and tell the person you have been waiting for this for months. You could have said 'hey what a coincidence' there are now two quite similar maps and three persons interested in the subject. Amitchell125 please meet Erik and vice versa. Can we join hands. From reading you note below I first thought 'Are you mixing us up and think we are the same person.' No mention at all of what already had been done. No requests to clear the image of texts or make the surrounding area stand out. Yes I can also generate a svg version. We probably use the same software: QGIS. You social skills seem not on par with your editing skils. Erik Zachte (talk) 03:34, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you feel that way. Best wishes to you. Noleander (talk) 03:54, 27 February 2026 (UTC)

- Wow! I just saw this pop up on my feed, incredible work so far Noleander. Rivers are one of my favorite subjects to see improved and doing it for the longest is impressive. My only suggestion would be a change of infobox image - the young Nile is beautiful, but an overhead view of the Nile somewhere along its course after the confluence of the White and Blue Niles I think would better confirm to readers that yes, this is that river. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 10:51, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I agree the info box image needs to be improved, I'll search for something better. You're right to say it should be an image that identifies the river. I may wait until GA review is finished to change the image, I don't want to interfere too much while the review is underway. Noleander (talk) 11:44, 16 February 2026 (UTC)

Nile map
[edit]
Hi, I have spent a happy afternoon producing a map intended to replace the satellite image showing the differences sources of the river, and the drainage basin map below it. Together they take up quite a bit of space (squashing other stuff) and (though I say it myself) don't look as good as mine. Please feel free to use it - any amendments are are easy enough to do as it is an SVG file. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 17:44, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks!! I've been searching for a better map for months. This new map from you is priceless ... I'll definitely use it before I take the article to FA. And SVG. SVG!! You have no idea how many PNG/JPEG maps I've had to deal with. Especially in James Cook .. the creator of the maps with vector routes of Cook's voyages would burn their vector data into a PNG pixel file and upload the PNG to Commons. So I could not edit the route vectors ... frustrating!! SVG is the best. Hat's off to you! Noleander (talk) 17:55, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
