Jones arbeitete über Von-Neumann-Algebren, also Operatoralgebren, und entdeckte während dieser Arbeit eine neue – auch Experten überraschende – Knoteninvariante: das Jones-Polynom. Jones arbeitete auch über exakte Modelle der statistischen Mechanik.
