Paracanthopterygii là danh pháp do Greenwood, Rosen, Weitzman và Myers đặt năm 1966,^[1] nguyên bao gồm các bộ Gadiformes (gộp cả Ophidiiformes), Percopsiformes, Lophiiformes, Gobiesociformes và Batrachoidiformes.

Điều chỉnh

Nghiên cứu năm 2000 của E. O. Wiley et al. cho thấy với thành phần như trên đây thì Paracanthopterygii là nhóm cận ngành hoặc đa ngành, do Batrachoidiformes và Ophidiiformes (= Ophidioidei) nằm trong Percomorpha.^[2] Nghiên cứu năm 2003 của Miya et al. cho thấy Ophidiiformes và Lophiiformes nằm trong Percomorpha.^[3] Nghiên cứu năm 2005 của Miya et al. chuyển Batrachoidiformes sang Percomorpha.^[4]

Việc tách Gobiesociformes sang Percomorpha lấy theo Wiley & Johnson (2010);^[5] còn việc gộp Zeiformes vào Paracanthopterygii lấy theo Chen et al. (2003)^[6][7] và việc gộp Stylephoriformes vào Paracanthopterygii lấy theo Miya et al. (2007).^[8][9]

Như vậy, sau các điều chỉnh thì Paracanthopterygii (được gọi là Paracanthomorphacea trong Betancur-R. et al. (2013)^[10]) là một nhóm cá xương thật sự (Teleostei) với phần lớn các loài là cá biển sống theo kiểu săn mồi.

Các bộ Batrachoidiformes, Lophiiformes, Ophidiiformes và Gobiesociformes hiện nay được xếp trong Percomorphaceae. Bộ Gadiformes cùng với Stylephorus chordatus hiện nay được coi là nhóm chị-em với Zeiformes. Vị trí của bộ Polymixiiformes là không chắc chắn, với một số tác giả xếp nó trong Paracanthopterygii,^{[4][11][12][13]} nhưng một số tác giả khác thì lại xếp nó bên ngoài Paracanthopterygii.^{[14][15][16][17]}
